After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy at Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), Raoni participated in an exchange program at the University of Minnesota Horticultural Research Center (HRC). Back in Brazil he worked as research support personnel at Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG) and later got his master’s and D.Sc. degree at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) with one year at UC Davis as a visiting scholar. After finished his D.Sc. got a post-doc scholarship at UFLA in the Tissue Culture Laboratory – Department of Agriculture.
Raoni’s goals as an intern with the WA Tree Fruit Research Commission include gaining a wide understanding of tree production and orchard management, work with applied research with clear goals, collaborate with distinct research groups respecting WTFRC demands, get a broader view of fruit growers’ bottlenecks and study possible solutions and learn how to operate common machinery used in fruit tree production.
On the personal side, Raoni has very clear goals while in the US:
- Visit at least one National Park
- Go to a shooting range
- Practice outdoor sports
- Meet local farmers
- Buy a car
